Google has officially opened its local office in Pakistan, marking a new phase in the technology company’s presence in the country. The office was inaugurated on Tuesday, August 18, during a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the inauguration alongside Google Global Affairs Vice President Wilson L. White and other government and company officials.
Google Sees Long-Term Potential in Pakistan
During a meeting with the Google delegation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan had significant room to develop a stronger partnership with the technology giant.
He pointed to the country’s ongoing digital transformation and large young population, saying these factors could play an important role in changing Pakistan’s economic outlook.
US Chargé d’Affaires in Pakistan Natalie Baker was also present during the meeting.
Google’s Wilson L. White described the opening of the office as a major milestone for the company’s relationship with Pakistan. He said Google had been investing in and working with the country for more than a decade.
Three Areas of Focus
White said Google’s support for Pakistan’s ambition to become a $30 billion IT export hub would focus on three areas.
These include investment in Pakistani talent, support for manufacturing and infrastructure connected to export hardware, and investment in local businesses.
According to White, developing Pakistan’s digital economy will require continued investment in people. He noted that Google’s career certificate programmes and partnerships with schools and teachers have already helped provide digital skills training to more than one million Pakistanis.
Free Gemini Access for Students
Google also announced plans to provide one year of free Gemini subscriptions to students in Pakistan. A formal announcement regarding the offer is expected later in the week.
The move could give students broader access to Google’s AI tools as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important across education, employment and technology-driven industries.
Google’s Expanding Digital Footprint
Farhan Qureshi, Cluster Director for Google Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, said the new office reflects the company’s confidence in Pakistan’s digital potential and local talent.
He said the local presence would build on Google’s existing partnerships and programmes while supporting Pakistan’s efforts to develop into a regional technology and export hub.
Google also pointed to the Chromebook assembly line established by its local partners as part of this wider technology footprint.
Economic Impact and Digital Skills
In its statement, Google said its upskilling programmes have reached more than one million teachers, students, developers and creators with digital skills.
The company also said its products and programmes have contributed Rs3.9 trillion in economic benefits for Pakistani businesses and households, while supporting 965,000 jobs.
With its local office now operational, Google said it plans to expand its work with the Pakistani government and partners across the country’s digital ecosystem.
AI Skills Initiative Already Underway
The latest development follows the launch of AI Seekho 2026, a joint initiative announced earlier this year by the Pakistani government and Google.
The programme is designed to help young people, developers and professionals build artificial intelligence skills through vibe coding, with the training offered without financial barriers.
The opening of Google’s Pakistan office now adds a permanent local presence to the company’s existing initiatives, partnerships and investments in the country’s growing technology ecosystem.
