A new report submitted to the US Congress has drawn attention across South Asia after noting that Pakistan gained a tactical edge over India during the brief military confrontation in May 2025. The findings come from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission — a body that studies China’s global defence and political footprint, including its role in regional conflicts.

    • 4. India–Pakistan Dynamics

For Pakistan, the report adds a new layer to the ongoing debate about military preparedness, technology partnerships and the shifting balance of power in the region.

How Pakistan Gained an Edge

According to the commission’s assessment, Pakistan used several modern Chinese defence systems during the four-day exchange — systems that appear to have played a key role in strengthening its response capabilities.
These included newly-acquired air-defence assets, advanced air-to-air missiles and upgraded fighter technology integrated into Pakistan’s existing fleet.

The report describes the May engagement as one of the most intense encounters between the two countries in recent years. While it does not claim a full strategic shift, it notes that Pakistan’s use of modern equipment created “temporary operational advantages” at key moments of the conflict.

China’s Role Under the Spotlight

The report also highlights China’s importance in Pakistan’s defence structure. It suggests that Beijing’s growing involvement — from technology transfer to training and real-time data exchange — helped Islamabad respond more quickly and effectively.

For Washington, this is a signal of how China’s military partnerships are evolving.
For Pakistan, it reinforces a long-standing dynamic: modernisation is increasingly linked to Chinese systems, platforms and cooperation frameworks.

Why This Matters for Pakistan

The commission’s findings carry several implications:

1. Strengthened Defence Image

Pakistan’s performance, as described in the report, may boost its credibility in regional defence circles, especially as it transitions towards newer technologies.

2. Diplomatic Weight

Recognition from a US congressional body could influence how other countries assess Pakistan’s defence readiness and strategic position.

3. Industry Momentum

With Pakistan already expanding local production and co-development with Chinese firms, the report may accelerate interest in deeper collaboration.

4. India–Pakistan Dynamics

The findings add a new dimension to the broader security narrative between the two nuclear-armed neighbours — especially as both continue to modernize rapidly.

The US congressional assessment gives Pakistan rare recognition for its tactical performance during the May 2025 conflict. It also underscores how deeply China’s defence cooperation is shaping Pakistan’s modern military posture. As regional tensions continue to fluctuate, Pakistan will need to balance capability, diplomacy and long-term sustainability — because a single advantage in a short conflict is only one part of a much bigger security picture.
