Meta has officially unveiled “Alif,” its first-ever Urdu-language artificial intelligence model, marking a major milestone for Pakistan’s growing AI and tech ecosystem. The launch aims to make AI technology more inclusive and accessible for millions of Urdu speakers worldwide.
What is Alif?
Alif is Meta’s new Urdu-language AI assistant, designed to understand and communicate naturally in Urdu. It allows users to ask questions, get information, and interact in their native language — all powered by Meta’s advanced large language models.
The launch event took place at the “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation” conference, organized by Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) in collaboration with Meta.
Why It Matters
This initiative represents a huge leap toward making technology more inclusive in Pakistan. By introducing AI that understands Urdu, Meta and MoITT are breaking language barriers that have long limited access to digital services.
According to Meta, Alif supports Pakistan’s “Digital Nation” vision and aligns with the country’s upcoming National AI Policy, aiming to accelerate innovation in education, government, and the public sector.
Meta also launched a localized guide titled “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama” — offering insights on how governments can use open AI models like Llama to enhance digital governance.
Minister of State for IT & Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja hailed the launch as “a transformative step for Pakistan’s digital future.”
She added, “With Alif, we’re ensuring that technology speaks our language — so that every citizen can be part of the digital revolution.”
Meta’s Regional Policy Director Sarim Aziz said the initiative reflects Meta’s commitment to empowering local communities and fostering AI adoption in native languages.
