Veteran Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nabeel Gabol has publicly claimed that global streaming platform Netflix is developing a high-profile scripted series centered on Lyari — one of Karachi’s most historically significant and culturally vibrant neighbourhoods.

According to Gabol, he was approached by representatives of a Netflix production team about what he described as a three-season show aimed at portraying the “real Lyari,” emphasizing its social fabric, political rivalries, and internal power structures rather than what he sees as reductive depictions in foreign media.

Gabol also asserted that a production delegation from Netflix is expected to visit Pakistan in March 2026 to advance discussions on the project.

Casting Claims and Wagner Moura Mention

One of the most widely shared aspects of Gabol’s remarks was his claim regarding casting interest. He stated that producers allegedly expressed interest in Brazilian actor Wagner Moura — known internationally for portraying Pablo Escobar in Netflix’s Narcos citing a perceived physical resemblance and suggested that a lead character inspired by Gabol’s own political career could be portrayed by Moura.

This part of the claim has attracted significant attention online, though there is no public confirmation from Netflix or Moura’s representatives about any involvement. Industry observers stress that such casting statements should be treated as unverified until formally announced by the platform.

Lyari’s Media Representation

Gabol’s comments arrive amid heightened discussion after his criticism of the Indian film Dhurandhar (2025), which he contends features a character modelled on him a portrayal he says is historically inaccurate.

Lyari known both for its deep cultural, sporting, and community roots and for past associations with gang conflicts has been depicted variously in regional cinema and documentaries. Gabol has been vocal about balancing international portrayals with narratives grounded in local experience.

Official Status

As of this writing, Netflix has not issued an official statement confirming the development of a Lyari series, the reported visit, or any casting details involving Wagner Moura. Netflix’s content slate typically remains confidential until formal promotional campaigns are launched
