In a groundbreaking move to enhance law enforcement and emergency response, the Lahore Safe City Authority (LSCA) has announced the deployment of drones capable of reaching crime scenes before police units. The initiative, launched under the Safe City modernization program, is designed to dramatically reduce response time and improve situational awareness for police operations across Lahore.

According to LSCA officials, the system will be directly linked to the 15 emergency helpline, allowing drones to be automatically dispatched within seconds of a distress call. Each drone will operate within a 15-kilometre radius, streaming real-time video footage to the Safe City Command and Control Center, enabling officers to assess incidents before ground teams arrive.

How the Drone Response System Works

When a 15 helpline call is received, the integrated Safe City network will trigger the nearest drone’s launch sequence. These high-speed drones are equipped with:

  • HD and infrared cameras for both day and night surveillance.
  • Live streaming capability to the LSCA command center.
  • Automated flight paths pre-mapped for major urban zones.

Officials say the footage will assist dispatchers in verifying the nature of an incident, ensuring that the right resources — whether police, Rescue 1122, or traffic units — are deployed swiftly.

“This system will act as our eyes in the sky,” said an LSCA spokesperson. “By reaching the scene before human responders, drones will allow us to understand what’s happening in real time — whether it’s a robbery, accident, or violent altercation — and guide our field units accordingly.”

Pilot Project and Broader Use Cases

Initially, the drone surveillance program will be rolled out as a pilot project across selected zones of Lahore, focusing on high-crime and high-traffic areas. The LSCA plans to evaluate system performance and scalability before extending coverage citywide.

Beyond crime response, the drones will also play a vital role in:

  • Crowd monitoring during protests and political rallies.
  • Traffic management and congestion monitoring.
  • Disaster and emergency coordination, including fires and natural disasters.

The drones will operate under strict guidelines to ensure data privacy and operational safety, with all video footage stored and managed in compliance with Pakistan’s Cyber Security and Data Protection policies.

A Leap Forward in Smart Policing

Experts believe the move could mark a turning point in Pakistan’s approach to urban surveillance and smart policing. With Lahore already serving as a model city for digital security initiatives, drone integration is seen as a logical next step in modernising emergency response.

Technology analysts note that drone-based first response systems have already shown success in Dubai, Singapore, and certain U.S. cities, where they’ve reduced emergency response times by up to 50%.

“The LSCA’s decision positions Lahore among the emerging global smart cities leveraging aerial technology for public safety,” said a security technology consultant familiar with the project. “This initiative could revolutionize how authorities handle everything from routine traffic accidents to major public security incidents.”

The Safe City drone project reflects the Punjab government’s growing focus on technology-driven policing and urban resilience. If successful, the system could be expanded to other major cities, including Karachi, Islamabad, and Faisalabad, integrating drones into national-level emergency management frameworks.

For now, Lahore residents can expect to see drones patrolling the skies as part of this high-tech experiment in faster, smarter, and safer policing.
