In a landmark step for Pakistan’s digital transformation, Jazz, the country’s leading digital telecom operator, in collaboration with DynaSys Networks, has launched Pakistan’s first city-wide LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network). The rollout, starting in Lahore, marks the beginning of a new era in smart city infrastructure and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.

This pioneering initiative lays the foundation for connected urban environments where sensors, devices, and city systems communicate in real-time — enabling smarter, safer, and more sustainable cities.

What Is LoRaWAN and Why It Matters

LoRaWAN is a low-power, long-range wireless communication technology designed for IoT devices. It allows sensors and devices to transmit small packets of data over long distances with minimal energy consumption. This makes it ideal for city-wide networks that monitor and manage infrastructure, utilities, traffic, and public services.

By deploying a city-wide LoRaWAN network, Jazz and DynaSys are enabling:

  • Massive IoT connectivity for sensors and smart devices.
  • Low power consumption, extending battery life of connected devices for years.
  • Reliable communication across large urban and semi-urban areas.
  • Scalable applications in industries ranging from agriculture to transport and energy.

The Vision Behind the Project

According to officials, the goal is to accelerate Pakistan’s digital growth by creating a national IoT backbone. This project is aligned with the government’s smart city and digital economy objectives.

Jazz has described the initiative as “a breakthrough in connected infrastructure” that will transform how cities function — from energy efficiency to public safety. DynaSys, a leading IoT solutions provider, said the network will act as a “catalyst for a smarter Pakistan,” providing the digital layer required to integrate IoT into daily urban operations.

Smart City Applications

The Lahore rollout opens doors to a wide range of real-world applications that can transform city management and quality of life:

  • Smart Utilities: Sensors to monitor water usage, detect leaks, and manage electricity grids efficiently.
  • Waste Management: Smart bins that send alerts when full, optimizing collection routes.
  • Traffic & Parking: Real-time monitoring of traffic flow and availability of parking spaces.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Measuring air quality, temperature, humidity, and noise levels.
  • Smart Street Lighting: Automated control based on time, weather, and human presence.
  • Asset Tracking: Monitoring municipal vehicles, shipments, or public transport fleets.
  • Agriculture & Irrigation: Remote monitoring of soil, water, and crop conditions for urban and rural farms.

These systems collectively help reduce costs, save energy, and improve the efficiency of public services — a core goal of smart city ecosystems.

Data Security and Local Compliance

The network is fully compliant with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) IoT framework. Data generated through connected devices will be hosted on local servers, ensuring privacy, security, and national data sovereignty.

This move not only adheres to regulatory standards but also strengthens Pakistan’s technological independence — a critical step as data becomes the new digital currency in the connected world.

A Step Towards a Smarter Pakistan

The Lahore launch is only the beginning. Jazz and DynaSys plan to expand this infrastructure across major cities like Karachi, Islamabad, and Faisalabad in the coming years.

This city-wide LoRaWAN network positions Pakistan as a regional leader in smart infrastructure deployment, enabling both the public and private sectors to innovate with IoT-based solutions. From sustainable urban development to digital agriculture, the possibilities are vast.

The collaboration between Jazz and DynaSys marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s digital evolution. With the establishment of the country’s first city-wide LoRaWAN network, Pakistan takes a bold step toward becoming a connected, data-driven nation.

As cities grow and digital challenges multiply, such technologies will be key to improving quality of life, ensuring efficient governance, and building a future-ready urban ecosystem.
