In its latest Speedtest Connectivity Report covering January through June 2025, Ookla has ranked PTCL Flash Fiber as the top fixed broadband provider in Pakistan. With a score of 56.95, Flash Fiber edges out close rivals Transworld (56.71) and Nayatel (56.31) in what has been a tightly contested competition.

Key Findings from the Report

Overall Provider Rankings

  • PTCL Flash Fiber leads with 56.95, making it the best fixed internet provider nationwide.
  • Transworld follows closely with a score of 56.71.
  • Nayatel secures third place with 56.31.
  • Other notable providers in the Top 5 include Cybernet and Connect Communications, while non-fiber PTCL services lag significantly with a score of 41.59.

City-Wise Performance

  • Islamabad tops the list among major Pakistani cities, with a median fixed download speed of 20.36 Mbps.
  • Karachi ranks second, followed by Rawalpindi in third place.
  • Slower median speeds were observed in Faisalabad (13.77 Mbps), followed by Multan and Peshawar.

Regional Disparities

  • The Islamabad Capital Territory leads all regions with a median fixed download speed of about 20.21 Mbps.
  • Sindh ranks second among regions, followed by Balochistan.
  • Regions like FATA, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa record much lower speeds — FATA averaging just 5.31 Mbps.

What This Means & Why It Matters

  • Fiber vs Non-Fiber: The report highlights that fiber-based broadband (e.g. Flash Fiber, Transworld, Nayatel) delivers significantly better speed, consistency, and overall quality compared to DSL or non-fiber services.
  • Tight Competition: The narrow gap between PTCL Flash Fiber, Transworld, and Nayatel shows that incremental improvements could easily shift rankings.
  • Urban-Rural Gap: While cities like Islamabad and Karachi are seeing strong performance, many less developed regions remain far behind, showing the need for nationwide investment in broadband.

Challenges & Considerations

  • Latency & Stability: Speed alone does not define quality. User experience also depends on stability, packet loss, and latency — especially for gaming and video conferencing.
  • Coverage: While Flash Fiber is expanding rapidly, not all neighborhoods are fully covered, leading to varied user experiences.
  • Affordability: Cost per Mbps, installation fees, and customer service remain important factors for consumers in choosing an ISP.

Outlook & Next Steps

  • For the ISPs: Staying on top will require continuous upgrades, expanded fiber rollout, and better customer support. With Transworld and Nayatel close behind, competition remains fierce.
  • For Policymakers: The speed gap between urban and rural areas calls for policies and initiatives to ensure equitable broadband access across Pakistan.
  • For Consumers: Customers should look at real-world performance in their own cities rather than just national rankings when selecting a provider.

According to Ookla’s first half of 2025 Speedtest Connectivity Report, PTCL Flash Fiber is officially the fastest fixed broadband provider in Pakistan. The achievement reflects progress in the country’s digital infrastructure, but also highlights persistent challenges in regional equality and service consistency. While the competition among providers is tight, it ultimately benefits consumers as companies strive to deliver faster, more reliable internet nationwide.
