Social media giant Meta has rolled out its much-anticipated Teen Accounts feature in Pakistan for Facebook and Messenger, aiming to provide a safer and more age-appropriate digital experience for young users.

The new update comes as part of Meta’s global efforts to ensure teenagers engage online with stronger privacy protections and parental guidance tools. Teen Accounts will now include built-in safeguards that limit who can interact with minors, the type of content they see, and how their information is shared.

According to Meta, the rollout in Pakistan reflects the company’s commitment to extending these protections to a wider audience, especially in regions where social media usage among teenagers continues to rise sharply.

Key Features of Teen Accounts

  • Age Verification: Parents and guardians can now help teens confirm their age to ensure they receive the correct account setup.
  • Privacy Controls: By default, teen accounts will have stronger privacy settings, limiting unwanted interactions.
  • Content Filters: Restrictions will be placed to reduce exposure to sensitive or harmful content.
  • Parental Involvement: Parents will receive prompts to assist their teens in setting up accounts responsibly.

Industry experts say this move is timely, as concerns about teen safety online have been growing in Pakistan with the rising use of social media among school and college-going students.

“This is a positive step. Social media companies need to take responsibility to protect young users, especially in markets like Pakistan where awareness around digital safety is still developing,” said a local digital rights activist.

With the launch of Teen Accounts, Facebook and Messenger are expected to give parents more confidence in their children’s online activities while still allowing teenagers to enjoy social media in a safer environment.

The feature is being gradually rolled out and is expected to be available to all eligible accounts across Pakistan in the coming weeks.
