The federal government has announced a major initiative aimed at empowering youth in Karachi through digital access and education. Under the scheme, thousands of students enrolled in universities and colleges across the city will receive free laptops as part of the government’s broader push to enhance digital learning and bridge the technology gap in higher education.

According to officials, the distribution will begin in phases, targeting students who demonstrate strong academic performance and meet eligibility criteria set by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The program is expected to cover both public and private institutions, ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds benefit from the scheme.

The government stated that this initiative is part of its commitment to fostering an “inclusive digital Pakistan,” where access to technology becomes a fundamental right for students. Alongside laptops, the plan includes digital literacy training and support to help students integrate technology into their academic and professional growth.

Education experts have welcomed the move, highlighting how free laptops can significantly boost research, innovation, and online learning opportunities for Karachi’s youth. They also noted that with increasing reliance on digital tools for assignments, virtual classes, and skill development, such initiatives are crucial for preparing students for the global job market.

The federal government is expected to release a detailed roadmap for registration and verification in the coming weeks, with an official launch event scheduled in Karachi.
